Corporal Paul David Trevor Thomas was killed in action in Basrah on 17 August 2004. A member of the 2nd Battalion The Light Infantry, he was serving in southern Iraq attached to the 1st Battalion The Cheshire Regiment. Aged 29, he was the only son of David and Joyce.
His platoon commander, Lieutenant Will Follett, said:
"Taff was a proud Welshman who had a passion for all sports. He was a keen rugby supporter as well as following his local football club, Shrewsbury Town, He was an immensely popular member of the platoon, widely regarded as its backbone, through his diligence, professionalism and unfaltering enthusiasm to the job and the soldiers under his command. His death has shocked the platoon, especially those soldiers who were with him when he died. He will be sorely missed
Hey up Taff lad, proper gutted I never got to say goodbye to ya pal.
If there was one person In the whole of fsp coy that I was glad to have around it was always you mate. I learned of your passing from
One of the lads and was left truly devastated mate. I sit everyday
And I do Mean EVERY day and think of the banter we used to
Have when the rugby was on and Wales would inevitably get beaten
By mighty England lol. There are some fine lads that are no longer with us mate and every last one a hero, but you'll always be the pick
Of the bunch pal. You may have been tighter than a ducks backside but there wasn't a better thought of lad on the company than you Taff and every man jack from the old 2li always remembers you over a drink or ten.
I'm doing Brecon this year with my daughter and there is absolutely no way that I will pass by without coming to see ya mate as it's long over due and I need to have a sit down and remember the old days!
Anyway Paul I'll be down In the summer to see ya all the way from sunny Yorkshire. Say hello to the rest of the boys up there for me and I'll catch ya soon brother x

Those we love remain with us
for love itself lives on
and cherished memories never fade
because a loved ones gone
those we love can never be
more than a thought apart
for as long as there is memory
they'll live on in the heart.
angel in my pocket I am a tiny angel
I'm smaller than your thumb
I live in peoples pockets
That's where I have my fun
I don't suppose you've seen me
I'm too tiny to detect
Though i'm with you all the time
I doubt we've ever met
Before I was an angel...
I was a fairy in a flower
God himself hand picked me
And gave me angel power
Now god has many angels
That he trains in angel pools
We become his eyes and ears and hands
We become his special tools
And because god is so busy
With way too much to do
He said that my assignment
Is to keep close watch on you
When he tucked me in your pocket
He blessed you with angel care
Then told me to never leave you
And I vowed always to be there
